THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, May 5, 2009.

J. Scott Corbett

On a beautiful May Day, and surrounded by his family, Scott Corbett left this world. No regrets, he said, but he wished he had more time. He died from a rare disease known as neuro-endocrine cancer.

Scott was born June 7, 1953, in Ames, to F. Irene and John Dudley Corbett. He spent his childhood and much of his adulthood surrounded by Iowa woodlands, which he loved. He built houses and he planted trees. His favorite Wendell Berry aphorism was that a true conservationist is one who plants a tree in the shade of which he’ll never sit.

He enjoyed working with wood, fishing, gardening, raising chickens and all manner of culinary delights and celebrations. He had a quick laugh, a passionate hug, a sweet, sweet smile and a willing ear.

For almost 20 years, he was a neo-natal intensive care nurse at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. His skilled and compassionate care helped innumerable babies and their parents. His love for his work showed. In his career, Scott helped “catch” about 6,000 babies.

His greatest joy and pride were his sons, Michael, 15, and Gabriel, 12, and he honored their mother, Sherry Corbett. He is remembered with great love and joy by his wife, Brenda Barton, and her children.

He is survived by his father, John; one sister, Julia, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and one brother, Jim, of Berkeley, Calif., and Jim’s wife, Linda Kilby.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene.

If you wish to remember Scott, he asked that you donate to your favorite charity or plant a tree.
