Herman K. Hougland, 98, of Story City passed away at his home Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Visitation preceded the service one hour. Burial was in Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Herman Hougland was born Nov. 2, 1910 near Story City to Hans and Christina (Wicks) Hougland. He was baptized Dec. 10, 1910, and confirmed May 24, 1925, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City, where he remained a lifelong member having served as a Deacon and Trustee.

He attended high school in Gilbert, Iowa. On June 21, 1957, he was united in marriage to Dora Bernice Swenson at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They had one son, Keith Herman, born August 9, 1958. Both his wife and son died of cancer in 1987.

Herman farmed near Randall, Iowa and began raising turkeys in the 1920's. He remained active on his farm throughout most of his lifetime. In his later years he moved to assisted living at Timberland Village in Story City. He enjoyed fishing with his son, friends and nephews. Herman was well-loved by all the children and he always enjoyed them.

He is survived by his sister, Jeanette Thorsbakken of Story City; his sister-in-law, Ellen Hougland of Randall; and many nieces and nephews.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dora; and his son Keith. Also preceding him in death are two infant brothers, Selmer and Silas; two sisters, Sylvia Swanson of Springfield, Illinois and Irene Anderson of Story City; and a brother Arlen Hougland of Story City.
