Edward C. (Christian) Larsen, 86, of Nevada, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada, where he had been a resident the 4 1/2 years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. Interment will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.

He was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Ames, to William Anton and Evelyn Irene (Rasmussen) Larsen. He was born, raised, and later farmed and owned the Larsen Century Farm.

He attended and graduated high school from Milford Township Consolidated School in 1940. He then entered Iowa State College as an engineering student. After this, Ed traveled to Hollywood, Calif., and worked at Douglas Aircraft in the engineering and drafting department. He wanted to serve his country during war time and join the U.S. Army, but due to a back injury, chose to help with the war effort by going to work for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan. It was there he met his future wife, Vada Lucille Marcy. They were married Feb. 7, 1946, in Nashua, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale.

He and Vada decided to return to Iowa and began farming with his father, William, on the family farm. While he farmed two sets of land, he also began working for the federal government at the National Animal Disease Laboratory in the engineering department until he retired in 1985, but continued to farm the century old farm.

He enjoyed bowling, public speaking as a member of Toastmasters, square dancing, and belonging to the 500 Card Club and Milford Social Hour Club.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vada Larsen, of Bethany Manor in Story City, and their children, Rodger (Nancy) Larsen, of San Diego, William “Bill” (Kathy) Larsen, of Kasota, Minn., Debra (Don) Carlson, of Fort Dodge, and Steve (Renee’) Larsen, of Nevada. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jessica and Eric Larsen, Rianne Carlson, Chris Larsen, Kelly (Brandon) Allen, and Sydney and Connor Larsen. He also has three great-grandchildren, Ryan Cebula, Marcus Larsen and Emma Rose Allen, and many nieces and nephews who were an important part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Evelyn Larsen; one brother, Myron, one sister in-law, Ruth (Hauser) Larsen; and one sister, Lucille Larsen (Randall), and one brother-in-law, Kenneth B. Randall.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions given to Story County Long Term Care and/or Story County Medical Center Foundation in honor of their loving care over the years.

Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
