Dr. Borg D. Holen, DVM

Dr. Borg D. Holen, DVM, 81, of Roland, died of complications from diabetes at Colonial Manor in Zearing on Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland with Rev. Steve Schwartz officiating. Burial will be in the Roland Cememtery.

Dr. Borg Holen was born Sept. 25, 1917 in Tacoma, Washington to Olaf and Laura (Andersen) Holen. He lived in Roland since 1926, was a 1936 graduate of Roland High School, and a 1942 graduate of Iowa State University, were he pitched and played first base for the Iowa State baseball team. He served as a captain in the Army during World War II. On April 10, 1943, he married Frances Christian in Oakland, California. She died Jan. 25, 1982. Dr. Holen was a doctor of Veterinary Medicine, practicing in Roland after World War II. He retired in 1977. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, the Roland Cemetery Board, American Veterinary Association, and the American Legion. He was active in gardening and shared with many his enjoyment of fishing and hunting, as well as his love for animals.

Dr. Holen is survived by two daughters, Kristie Truman and husband Bud of Roland, and Deborah Holen of Chandler, Arizona; a son, Kevin Holen of Urbandale; and three grandchildren, Greta Truman and husband Keith Saunders, Shera Truman, and Anna Truman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 29 after 3 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Soderstrum Funeral Home in Roland.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.
