Esther B. Groomes March 26, 1916 - April 14, 1994

Esther B. Groomes, 78, of Nevada, died Thursday of cancer at the Story County Hospital in Nevada. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Cooper-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada, with the Rev. Jack Weida officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Esther Burley was born in rural Nevada on March 26, 1916 to Albert J. and Amelia (Zeigler) Burley. She married Forest Groomes in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 25, 1936. A homemaker, she resided all her life in Nevada and Story County. She graduated from Milford Township schools, and was a volunteer for the Story County Hospital. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and embroidering.

She is survived by six daughters, Joan Colhoun of Nevada, Barbara Clatt of Colo, Shirley Bauge of Huxley, Donna Lee of State Center, Karen Erickson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Alyce Wirth of Story City; a son, Richard Groomes of Toronto, Kan.; three sisters, Ethel Davis of Nevada, Betty Henderson of McCallsburg and Alyce Ververs of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, a sister, five brothers and a grandson.

Visitation will be Friday from noon to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Cooper-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Story County Long Term Care Facility in Nevada.
