THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 14, 2009.

Dale Williams, 93, of Green Hills Retirement Community, longtime Ames resident and voice of the Iowa State Cyclones on WOI Radio, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center. A gathering of friends and family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, with the family present from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, in Ames. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at United Church of Christ-Congregational, at Sixth Street and Kellogg Avenue, in Ames. A private family graveside service will be in Iowa State University Cemetery.

Dale was born July 19, 1915, on a farm near Iowa City, the son of Elmer and Mary Rowland Williams. He graduated from Iowa City High, where he lettered in football, basketball and track, and was very active in 4-H. He then attended Iowa State College, where he majored in animal science and graduated in 1939. His activities during college included president of the Block and Bridle Club. As a member of the ISC judging team, he won top honors and his team tied for first place at the International Livestock Show in Chicago. He was recognized for his high school record by being inducted into the Iowa City High Hall of Fame. After college, he was a county extension director in Winona County, Minn. He married Elsie (Kim) Kimbrell on June 2, 1947, in Ames. He worked for Iowa State as extension farm editor, and for the next 25 years he was also the “Voice of Cyclones,” doing basketball, football and baseball broadcasting. He organized the Cyclone Sports Network. He broadcast the boys and girls high school basketball tournaments from 1943 to 1968. He was a member of the Cyclone Club since its inception. In addition to his extensive avocation in sports, he made significant contributions to ISU as an extension agricultural editor. He was in demand as a swine judge, judging in almost every county in the state as well as at the Iowa State Fair. He moderated the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn. He was superintendent of the Swine Department at the International Livestock Show in Chicago until he retired. He was a longtime member of Ames United Church of Christ-Congregational.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie (Kim), of Ames; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Tim Linder, of Solon; one son, Kyle Williams, of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, Alecia (Jared) Bucksa, of Nisswa, Minn., Kelsie (Chris) Campbell, of Denver, Colo., Nick Linder, of San Diego, and Gabrielle Williams, of St. Paul, Minn.; and one great-grandson, Louis Bucksa.

Memorials may be directed to his church or Iowa State University Foundation.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family.
