THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 7, 2009.

Lester Johnson, 79, a longtime rural Ames resident, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Gilbert Lutheran Church in Gilbert. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 9, also at Gilbert Lutheran Church.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family.

Lester O. Johnson Jr., 79, a longtime resident of rural Ames, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Gilbert Lutheran Church in Gilbert. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 9, at Gilbert Lutheran Church.

Lester was born Sept. 27, 1929, the son of Lester Oliver Johnson Sr. and Mable Hanson Johnson. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1947. He married Sally Andrews Oct. 1, 1950, in Oskaloosa. He farmed until he went to work as a lab tech at the Iowa Department of Transportation for 28 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, Gilbert Lutheran Church (serving on the Church Council) and was a former member of the Gilbert Lions Club. One of his greatest joys in life was the pure enjoyment of people; he cherished times with his family, especially his grandchildren, special times on the farm, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Johnson, of Ames; two sons, John (Beth), of Ames, and Jeff, of Gilbert; and two grandchildren, Kimberly Johnson, of Manchester, and Mark Johnson, of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pauline Booher and Virginia Johnson; and one granddaughter, Krista Beth Johnson.

Memorials may be directed to Gilbert Lutheran Church
