THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 7, 2009.

Richard B. Brown, 81, of Gilbert, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames, with Pastor Tom Prochnow officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Gilbert Cemetery.

Richard Brown was born Feb. 24, 1928, in rural Story County, to Corwin and Ethel (Markley) Brown. He married Peggy Ann Miller Oct. 14, 1972.

He was employed at the Ames Laundry for 30 years and as a Tribune carrier in Gilbert for 15 years. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a regular at the Tuesday “burger night” at the Open Flame in Gilbert. He was “the man with the crutches.”

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Brown, of Gilbert; one daughter, Jean (Joel) Martin, of Jewell; two sons, Steve (Jami) Brown and Rick Brown, all of Gilbert; five grandchildren, Megan (Matt) Piper, of Johnson, Neb., Katlyn Martin, of Jewell, Kendell Brown, of Waterloo, Christian “CJ” Brown, of King George, Va., and Julia Brown, of Waterloo; one great-grandson, Maverick Piper, of Johnson, Neb.; and his special yellow lab, Addie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, George Hale; infant grandchild, Callie Martin; four brothers, Clifford Markley, Glaidis Brown, Robert Brown, and Corwin Jr. Brown; and one sister, Marge Desher.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
