THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, March 26, 2009.

Ronald (Ronnie) D. Harmon, 66, passed away on March 23, 2009 at Israel Family Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ron was born on January 2nd, 1943 to William and Irma Harmon of Slater. He grew up in Slater and graduated from Ballard High School. He married Pam (McHone) Stewart in 1965. To this union were born 2 sons, Shawn and Shane.

After attending Wartburg College, Ron owned and operated H & S construction with Gary Severson, building many homes in the Ballard community and surround areas. They were well known for their quality of work and attention to detail. Later in life, Ron decided to return to Drake University in order to share his knowledge and love of science through teaching. He taught 8th grade science at Hoyt Middle School in Des Moines until his retirement in 2005.

Ron enjoyed a lifelong love of model railroading. This love was shared with his grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as Papa Choo Choo. During his retirement Ron took great pride in tending to his ever expanding hosta gardens, which contain more than 500 different varieties. He also enjoyed spending time in the timber hunting mushrooms and tending to his trees with his family.

Ron was a member of the Ames Rail Fans, Iowa Woodland Owners and Iowa Walnut Council, Chicago & North Western Historical Society and a charter member of the Boone Railroad Historical Society.

He leaves to cherish his memory his fiancee, Patsy Klatt; sons: Shawn (Karen) Harmon of Cedar Rapids and Shane (Jeni) Harmon of Huxley; Grandchildren: Brady, Blake and Sheridan; Siblings: Janice (John) Walker, Darrell (Myrna) Harmon, Richard (Cheryle) Harmon and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Lifepointe Church in Ames. Interment will be in the Slater Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00p.m. Thursday at the Soderstrum Funeral Home in Slater
