Rachel L. Leimer, 86, of Slater, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Her body has been gifted to the University of Iowa Body Deed Program.

Two memorial services have been planned: 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 2210 Lincoln Way, in Ames, and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 28, at the funeral parlor of Good Grief, INC — In the Name of Christ, 312 Main St., in Slater.

Rachel L. Leimer, 86, of Slater, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames of Alzheimer’s Disease. Her body has been gifted to the University of Iowa Medical School. Two memorial services have been planned: 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 2210 Lincoln Way, in Ames, and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 28, at the funeral parlor of Good Grief, INC — In the Name of Christ, 312 Main St., in Slater.

Rachel was born May 18, 1922, in Springfield, Ohio, to Charles and Ruth (Baynton) Fralick. She married Thomas R. Leimer June 14, 1952, in St. Paul, Minn. She had been a resident of Slater since 1965.

She graduated from Wittenberg University in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and was awarded a master’s degree in anatomy from the University of Minnesota in 1949. She was a member of Sigma Delta Epsilon, a graduate women’s scientific fraternity. From 1950-53, she was an instructor in biology at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. From 1972-74, she was a member of the faculty at Des Moines Area Community College, being the first program chairman of the associate degree nursing program. For 14 years, she served as a staff nurse in the special care nursery at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, retiring in 1986. From 1991-96, she was an employee of Slater Public Library.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas; six children, Teresita Leimer, of Fallbrook, Calif., Dr. Ann Leimer, of Redland, Calif., Marcella Van Oel, of Seattle, Wash., Timothy Leimer, of Des Moines, Nicholas Leimer, of Kansas City, Mo., and Renee Cuvelier, of Cresco; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dr. Charles Fralick, formerly of Springfield, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Medical Center for the special care nursery and/or Friends of the Slater Public Library.
