THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, February 12, 2009.

Neil Adrian Carpenter, 86, of Nevada, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at First Christian Church in Ames. Interment with military honors will be in Collins Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Memorials may be made to Israel Family Hospice House.

Neil was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Wagner, S.D., the son of Clarence and Laura Myrtle (Martin) Carpenter. He graduated from Wagner High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He married Gloria Smith on Dec. 21, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He obtained a master’s degree from Iowa State University in 1967. Neil was a partner of Ames Engineering and Testing from 1952 to 1985, selling to C.G.A. of Cedar Rapids. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ames where he was elder, deacon and chairman of the board; the Ames Lions Club; a lifetime member of the Professional Engineers Association; Anston-Marston Club; American Legion Wm. F. Ball Post 48 of Nevada; and served on the Condemnation Board of Story County. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and Soduko puzzles. He loved boating and playing chess with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Nevada; three sons, Michael Carpenter, of Dalton, Wis., Geoffrey Carpenter, of Bowling Green, Ky., and Tracy (Cindy) Carpenter, of Radcliffe; six grandchildren, Ian Carpenter, Jeremy Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, Daniel Carpenter, Logan Carpenter and Lucas Carpenter; one great-grandchild, Dayton Carpenter; one step-great-grandchild, Heather Upton; one brother, George Carpenter, of Maple Heights, Ohio; and one sister, Fern Powers, of Anthony, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter-in-law, Deborah Carpenter; two half sisters, Francis Verzani and Vera Burns; and one brother, Lyle Carpenter.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
