THE NEVADA JOURNAL, Nevada, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, February 5, 2009.

Harold Hale of Collins, 86, died Monday, February 2, 2009, after a lengthy battle with pulmonary disease.

Harold was born in Collins on September 24, 1922. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II in the European theatre. Prior to his retirement, he was the owner-operator of Hale's Grain Elevator in Collins.

Harold married the love of his life, Norene Oswalt, on August 2, 1942, at the Collins United Methodist Church. They shared 66 wonderful years together, displaying uncommon love and affection for each other on a daily basis.

Harold was a man who served others in many ways; through his work, his friendships, his commitment to his community, the many kindnesses he displayed to friends and acquaintances, his sense of humor and his 13 years of service on the Story County Hospital board. His most important service was to his family, as a loving spouse, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a man of many gifts, among them being his love of children and his ability to make each and every one smile and laugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Viola, and by a sister, Maude.

He is survived by his wife, Norene, sons Jim (Linda) of Clive, John (Terri) of Ankeny and daughter Judy of West Des Moines; 4 grandchildren, Tracy Jagim (Mike) of Waukee, Jeff Hale (Megan) of Sussex, Wi.; Kimberly Hale (Trevor Gooch) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Kristen Geisler (Mike) of Des Moines and 7 great-grandchildren, Alex, Mikaela, Tanner and Keegan Jagim, Sydney and Maren Hale, and Eli Geisler; and a niece, Joan Maher, of San Diego, Calif.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 5, at the Methodist Church in Collins. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 6, at the Methodist Church. Memorials may be left to Collins Little League baseball.

The family would like to thank the staff and doctors of the Story County Hospital in Nevada for their outstanding care of Harold for over 50 years. Special thanks to Dr. Arthur Check and nurse Nancy Klemme for their compassion and concern.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Collins, Iowa, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
