Dale R. "Jiggs" Smith, 89, of Ames and formerly of Nevada, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will be at a later date in the Gilbert Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Dale Smith was born May 28, 1919, in Colo, to Earney and Nellie (Hinman) Smith. He was baptized in Gilbert Congregational Church. He married Ruth Clouser April 15, 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in Guam, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was a proud member of the American Legion.

Dale was a printer at the Ames Daily Tribune and retired in 1981 from Graphic Forms in Nevada. He continued his printing career with his own company, S and S Printing, until 1998.

He enjoyed his family and was a real hit with his grandchildren. He had more fun and was the first one on the dance floor and the last one off.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry (Judy) Smith, of Boone, and Larry Smith, of Loveland, Colo.; one daughter, Judy (Bob) Wirth, of Gilbert; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; special friend, Virginia Hamme, of Ames; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Dodd, of Garner, and Leona Clouser, of Madrid; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Robert; three sisters; and five brothers.
