Muriel (Micki) Dirks Lounsberry, 88, of McCallsburg, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, of complications after a fall on the ice. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Interment will be in Colo Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Presbyterian Church in McCallsburg.

Micki was born Oct. 25, 1920, in Decorah, to Lillian and Esler C. Dirks. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1937 and went on to earn a college degree in physical education from Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa). After graduation, she taught for a year in Scarville. In August 1942, she married Robert H. (Bob) Lounsberry. While he served in World War II, she waited patiently at home. After the war, they made their home on the family farm near McCallsburg where they raised their family.

She served in various leadership roles and was actively involved in many community and civic organizations throughout her lifetime. Some of those include the McCallsburg Presbyterian Church, the Presbytery of North Central Iowa, Lions Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Prevent Blindness Iowa, Iowa Republican Women, PEO Sisterhood and Order of the Eastern Star. She visited all across the state of Iowa, traveled all of the United States, and represented Iowa in many countries around the world with her husband, Bob, while he served as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture for 18 years.

She is survived by five children, Bill Lounsberry, of Ankeny, Beth Rumph, of Plano, Texas, Janet (Peter) King, of Cedar Rapids, Paul (Kim) Lounsberry, of Indianola, and Steve (Linda) Lounsberry, of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Joann Anderson, of Minneapolis, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert H. Lounsberry; an infant son; two sisters; and one brother.

Fredregill Funeral Home of Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
