Aug. 21, 1919 - Oct. 30, 1996

Raymond C. Swanson, 77, of Ames died Wednesday of heart failure at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with the Revs. Orville Sanderson and Wayne Nieminen officiating. Burial will be in the Hillsdale Cemetery in Madrid.
Raymond C. Swanson was born near Woodward, the son of John A. and Emma (Toll) Swanson. He was a graduate of Kelley High School and the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Mr. Swanson served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. On Sept. 30, 1946, he married Vadonna B. Thompson in Nashua. Mr. Swanson was employed for Roy Hockman and Sons for eight years and was a supervisor at the Iowa State University Physical Plant for 23 years. He retired in 1983. He was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church; Golden K Kiwanis; past president of the Iowa State Bowling Association; board of Directors of the Ames Area Men's Bowing Association; secretary for 25 years. Mr. Swanson was awarded the Director of the Year Award in 1989 for the Ames Area Men's Bowling Association; inducted into the Ames Area Men's Bowling Association Hall of Fame; and inducted into the Iowa State Men's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1992.
Mr. Swanson is survived by his wife; two sons, Duane R. Swanson of Ames and Dennis L. Swanson of Creston; two grandchildren; two sisters, Glenda Adams of Waterloo and Hazel Downs of Madrid.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Visitation is Friday afternoon and evening, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home in Ames.
