April 4, 1915 - December 30, 1997

Hazel H. Downs, 82, of Kelley, died Tuesday of kidney failure at the Madrid Home, in Madrid. Funeral services are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater, with chaplain Carla Werre officiating. Burial will be at the Story Memorial Gardens in Ames.
Hazel H. Downs was born in rural Kelley to John A. and Emma (Toll) Swanson. On June 19, 1933, she married Walt Downs. Mrs. Downs and her husband owned Ames Bowling Supply; she worked at Collegiate Manufacturing and 10X company in Des Moines. During World War II, she worked as a secretary at Bremmerton Naval Station.
Survivors include two sons, LeRoy Downs, of Ames, and Gene Downs, of Centerville, Ohio; a sister, Glenda Adams, of Waterloo; five grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Friday after 3 p.m., with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.
