Sept. 27, 1925-Dec. 5, 2008

Louis Kingsley Hughes, 83, of Cambridge and formerly of Missouri Valley, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Louis was born Sept. 27, 1925, in Guide Rock, Neb., the son of Louis K. and Lois A. (Dexter) Hughes. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Appling in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945. He graduated from Peru State Teachers College, earning a bachelor's degree in education. He taught and coached at high schools in Nebraska and Iowa. He was united in marriage to Lila Foster and together they raised one son, Mike. He loved to camp and was a lifelong Nebraska football fan.

He is survived by his wife, Lila, of Cambridge; one son and daughter-in-law: Mike and Crystal Hughes, of Cambridge; one granddaughter: Haylie Hughes, of Waterloo; one sister and brother-in-law: Carol and Tom Getz, of Irvine, Calif; and one brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Sandi Hughes, of Costa Mesa, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herbert Hughes.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell.

Memorials may be made to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
