Robert "Bob" Eugene Ziel, 82, formerly of Boone, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at the VA Central Health Care System in Knoxville, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at First United Methodist Church in Boone, with the Rev. Philip Webb officiating. Interment, with full military honors and presentation of the flag conducted by the Veterans Council of Boone, will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, and again from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone. Visitation will continue from noon until time of service Thursday at the church.

Masonic services will be conducted by Mt. Olive Lodge 79 of Boone at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone.

Robert "Bob" Eugene Ziel was born May 18, 1926, in Hannibal, Mo., the son of Clarence and Lucy (Moore) Ziel. He grew up in the Muscatine area, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad as well as being the city marbles-shooting champion, something he was quite proud to claim.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II while he was still in high school. He served in the Pacific Theatre where he had stints on PT boats as well as working with the Seabees in constructing buildings and bridges on some of the islands in the South Pacific. He really enjoyed the Navy years and had numerous stories about adventures during the war.

He married Marilyn Samuelson on Oct. 9, 1948, in Des Moines, while attending AIB. He farmed with his father-in-law, Wallace Samuelson, for 42 years and later helped his son, Eric, farm in the Boone area. Farming was something he really loved with a passion. He also did income tax preparation for several years as a winter project when not farming. After retirement, he worked part time at Bohlen and Associates selling real estate. After Marilyn's passing, he married Mary Hayes on Nov. 9, 1991, and lived in Boone where they enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, playing cards and numerous other activities.

He was proud to have been part of bringing The Farm Progress Show to Boone County, especially since the show site is on ground that he had farmed for so many years. He was a longtime member of Farm Bureau, VFW, American Legion, Mt. Olive Masonic Lodge 79 AF and AM, White Shrine, Order of Eastern Star Magi Chapter 139, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and First United Methodist Church. He loved to sing and was a member of the Ametones Barbershop Chorus and other barbershop quartets for several years. He belonged to the Tall Corn Antique Car Club for several years and enjoyed going to car shows. He also was a 4-H leader for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ziel, of Boone; one son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Carol Ziel, of Boone; two granddaughters, Erica (Brent) Conklin, of Newport Beach, Calif., and Jennifer Ziel, of Boone; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Conklin, of Newport Beach, Calif.; one stepson, Bill (Becky) Gilliam, of Boone; two step-grandsons, Greg (Theresa) Gilliam, of Peoria, Ariz., and Matt Gilliam, of Council Bluffs; one step-granddaughter, Gina Judge, of Boone; eight step-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Fred (Carolene) Hickcox, of Saylorville; one sister-in-law, Beverly (Roland) Schoff, of Boone; one nephew, Alan (Jennifer) Schoff, of Boone; and nieces, Kim (Bruce) Uthe, of Ogden, and Karyl (Gene) Jones, of Huxley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lucy Ziel; and his first wife, Marilyn Ziel.
