Ronald Merle Handeland, 84, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Burial will be in Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg, with graveside military rites conducted by Samuel-Reid American Legion Post 334. A lunch will follow in the Bethany Fellowship Hall.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg.

Ronald was born April 30, 1924, in McCallsburg, to Carl and Gertrude (Christiansen) Handeland. He attended school at McCallsburg until entering the Merchant Marines.

He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944-47, serving in World War II. After the Merchant Marines, he was a truck driver for Rock Island Truck Line, Local 147 Teamsters Union. He retired in 1981. He moved to Colorado in 1982.

He married Harriet Davis May 26, 1946, in Hubbard.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet, of Beulah, Colo.; two sons, Lonnie Handeland, of Canon City, Colo., and Vincent (Patty) Handeland, of Boone; two daughters, Sandy Koenig, of Des Moines, and Janet (Walt) Bayliff, of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Gary (Jan) Handeland, of Stanhope; and five sisters, Corrine Rutzen, of Ames, Ardis (Bob) Schwartz, of Ames, Marilyn Holdridge, of Story City, Wilma (Stan) Myers, of Gilbert, and Shirley (Larry) Otta, of McCallsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, David, Dennis and Dale; one grandson, Aron; one sister, Lois Brandt; and one nephew, Mickey Brandt.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
