Clara Brown, 93, of Boone, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. She had been a resident at the home since March 1995. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home Chapel in Boone, with Rev. Dr. Richard Harken officiating. An Eastern Star service, conducted by Magi Chapter 139 of Boone, will immediately follow the funeral service. Interment will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service Friday, Oct. 24, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home Chapel in Boone.

Clara Brown was born Nov. 27, 1914, in Jackson Township, Boone County, the fourth child of Josias and Martha (Engstrom) Brown. She was a few weeks short of her 94th birthday.

During her childhood, Clara was active in 4-H, both at the local and county level; participated in music and drama activities at Jordan Consolidated School at Jordan, and graduated in 1932 with scholastic honors. After completing business training at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, she was employed by the Benton County REC in Vinton, where she remained until 1954, when she joined the staff of WOI Radio and TV at Iowa State University as an accountant. At the time of her retirement, Clara was chief accountant and assistant to the treasurer of the station. She enjoyed bridge, music, especially playing the piano and organ, and was an avid ISU fan.

Clara was active in the Order of Eastern Star Magi Chapter 139 in Boone, serving as organist for many years, and held many of the offices of the local chapter. She also served a year as chaplain of Iowa Eastern Star and as treasurer of the order for 10 years. Clara was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the choir, P.E.O. Chapter DD, Boone Women's Club and the Gradatim Club.

Survivors include a brother, Dean Brown and his wife, JoAnne, of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, June Brown, of Boone, and Betty Brown, of Adel; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Her parents; four brothers, Loren, Dwight, Edwin and Gail; two sisters, Elva Geyman and Ann Woodrow; and two nieces, Barbara and Ann, preceded her in death.
