David B. Palmer, 80, a resident of Arlington Heights, Ill., since 1973, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, after a brief illness. His life will be celebrated at a service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, Ill. Burial will be private.
David B. Palmer was born Oct. 17, 1927, in Pataskala, Ohio, to Russell and Mildred Palmer. He was educated at Muskingum College, Ohio State University and Iowa State University, earning a doctorate degree in agricultural engineering. After serving in the U.S. Army, he had long careers in teaching and research, as a professor at ISU, then as an international consultant for Harza Engineering Company (now MWH) in Chicago.
He held many leadership positions in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, and served two terms as president of the ASABE Foundation. He was a past president of the Rotary Sunshine Club of Arlington Heights, Ill., and was active in its preschool literacy program. He likewise was a past executive director of The Chicago Farmers, and for whom he led efforts to establish a regional living history farm. He played clarinet in the Mt. Prospect Community Band for more than 20 years. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, and was active in the music and Sunday school programs.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Beverly; one brother, Joseph (Pat) Palmer; his children, Joel Palmer, Sarah (Bob) Schandle, John Palmer and Alan (Donna) Palmer; and grandson, Owen Schandle.
In lieu of flowers, David's family suggests a charitable donation to the organization of your choice, or to either First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights Building Fund or the Foundation for Rotary International, in care of the Arlington Heights Sunshine Club.
