THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, October 8, 2008.

A memorial service for Robert J. Lee will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert J. Lee, 74, formerly of Ames, died Aug. 6, 2008, in Honolulu, Hawaii. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Burke Chapel, in Ames. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Robert Lee was born March 13, 1934, in Ames, to Karl and Marie (Judge) Lee. He graduated from Ames High School in 1952, and attended Iowa State College and the University of Colorado. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and took basic training in San Diego. In the Navy, he served as an electronics technician and eventually advanced to the rank of senior chief petty officer. The majority of his naval career was spent in the submarine service. His last assignment was aboard the nuclear submarine, U.S.S. James Monroe. He was chief of the boat, (COB) for the blue crew. Much of his career took place during the Cold War, and his training and whereabouts were top secret. During this time, he was reassigned to the State Department and took part in the Geneva Convention. Following his retirement from the Navy, he was employed at the Hale Koa Hotel in Honolulu.

He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ed Fawkes, of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Legion Post 37, Ames.

Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting his family.
