Lois Ruth Whitney, 81, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Burial will follow in Cambridge Cemetery. A visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.
Lois was born Jan. 8, 1927, to John and Sina (Larson) Christopherson in Cambridge. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1944. She worked at Bankers Life in Des Moines until she married Ronald Whitney, and together they farmed in White Oak for six years. In 1954, they moved to Iowa Falls, where they raised their five children and owned and operated the Iowa Falls Sales Pavilion until 1971. In 1971, they moved to Eldon, Mo., with their sons, Kevin and Calvin. She returned to her home area she loved in 1978 and resided in Huxley. At that time, she became the receptionist for the Story County Court House until she retired in 1992.
She was very involved as an officer of the Cambridge Historical Society and worked tirelessly for the Cambridge Alumni Association. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, whose first thought always was for the welfare of her family.
She will be sadly missed by her children, David of Golden Valley, Minn., Rayma of Vero Beach, Fla., Stewart (Hilda) of New Bern, N.C., Kevin (Noi) of Clovis, Calif., and Calvin of Lake Ozark, Mo.; grandchildren, Mandy, Beth, Tyler, Kasia, Khawyn, Brett and Brandon; two sisters, June Erickson and Edith Scott; and several nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Harold and Wendell; and an infant sister, Evelyn.
In lieu of flowers, the family will direct memorials to Cambridge Historical Society and Cambridge Alumni Association.
Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting with the arrangements.
