Marvin Dean Bear, 83, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Israel Family Hospice House. He had been a resident of Ames for 46 years. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, both at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Following the service, a lunch will be served at 12:00 noon at Grace Bible Church in Gilbert. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati, Iowa.
Marvin Dean Bear was born Oct. 7, 1924, at home in Wayne County, to James and Almeda (Printy) Bear. He served three years in the U.S. Navy. He married Alice Catherine Beer July 16, 1946.
Over the years, he was employed in farming, managing the O'Neil Dairy Farm north of Ames from 1957 to 1960, and then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in road maintenance. At the time of his retirement in 1988, he was the mailroom supervisor for the Iowa State University Library for 16 years.
He enjoyed camping, traveling, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by one daughter, Cathie (David) Rocke, of Gilbert; one son, Michael (Cindy) Bear, of Newton; two grandsons, Ian (Naomi) Rocke, of Dubuque, and Matthew Bear, of Portland, Ore.; two granddaughters, Deanne (Jamie) Schweitzer, of Portland, Ore., and Christina Bear, of Ames; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marietta (Eudean) Lord, of Promise City.
He was preceded in death by one son, Marvin David; his first wife, Alice; his second wife, Marlene; his parents; two brothers, Kermit and Allen; and one daughter-in-law, Dorothy.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Israel Family Hospice House or the Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission.
