McCALLSBURG — Olaus Helland, 71, died here about 8 o'clock Wednesday evening after an illness of about a year.

Mr. and Mrs. Helland and family came to McCallsburg about 19 years ago and up until a week ago lived on a farm a mile and a half west of town. They moved to McCallsburg March 1.

Mr. Helland was born in Norway in 1859 and came to the United States as a young man settling in Illinois and later moving to North Dakota.

Besides his wife, nine children, three brothers and a sister survive. The children include, J. O. Helland, Oscar Helland, Mrs. Ivan Johnson, Mrs. S. T. Sampson, and Mrs. Isaac Strum, all of McCallsburg; Otis and Minerva at home, Clarence H. Helland of Roland, and Mrs. Ivoe Moone of Chicago, Ill. Brothers are John and Lewis, both of North Dakota and Ole of Seneca, Ill. Marie, the sister, lives at Forest City.

A daughter, Mrs. Martin Hanskins, of McCallsburg, died about five years ago.

McCALLSBURG — Funeral services for Olaus Helland were held at the McCallsburg Lutheran church last Friday. The Rev. H. N. Bakke was in charge. Burial was in the McCallsburg cemetery.

Mr. Helland was born in Staranger, Norway, on Sept. 12, 1858. He came to the United States in July, 1870, with his parents, who settled in Illinois.

On Oct. 23. 1883, he was married to Johanna Caltvedt, and later moved to Petersburg, S. D. For the past 39 years the couple have operated a farm near McCallsburg.

There were 13 children, nine of whom survive the father. They are: Mrs. Sadie T. Sampson, Mrs. Bertha Strum, Mrs. Lovina Johnson, all of McCallsburg: Mrs. Blanch Moon of Chicago, and Oscar, John, Clarence, Otis and Minerva of McCallsburg. In addition to the children and Mrs. Helland, there are 18 grandchildren and three brothers and a sister.
