John was born Dec. 28, 1923, in Lincoln Township, Harrison County near Woodbine. He was the son of Leslie J. and Alice (Reed) McCann. He married Dorothy E. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific on the USS Vicksburg as a radar man from 1944 to 1946. Following his service, he attended Iowa State College in Ames from 1947-1948.

He farmed in the Ames and Gilbert area. While in college and while farming, he worked as a baker at Purity Bakery, Fareway, Ferguson's Bakery and Hy-Vee, all in Ames. He enjoyed working with his farm neighbors and visiting his many, many friends, often taking them donuts he had baked. He loved farming, feeding cattle and raising seed corn and was proud of his Irish heritage. He had many gifts, one of which was the way he fostered young people and challenged them to reach their greatest potential.

He is survived by one son, James E. McCann and his wife, Mary Ann, of Gilbert; two daughters, Carol Schneider and her husband, John Schneider, of Le Mars, and Rebecca Leuenhagen and her husband, Bryan Leuenhagen, of Meridian, Idaho; and grandchildren Jo Ellen and Andrew Schneider of Ames, and Nicholas Leuenhagen of Meridian, Idaho; step-grandson, Robert Wampler; step-granddaughter, Carol Kelly and her husband, Jerry, of Ames; great-grandchildren Megan, Brandon, Nichol and Nathan Kelly of Ames; brothers, Joe of Guthrie Center, Dean and Bill of Colorado; sister, Connie Henderson of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
