Robert E. Applegate, 70, of Nevada, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada.
He was born June 9, 1933, in Algona to Victor and Martha (Potter) Applegate. He graduated from Algona High School in 1950 and Iowa State College in 1954. He married Margaret Portor on Feb. 14, 1963, in Storm Lake. He was in the fertilizer business in sales and production. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as golf. He had a lifelong interest in agriculture and farming. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the American Legion in Maxwell.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Nevada; two daughters, Melodie Applegate of Omaha, Neb., and Dawn Charlet of Carson; a son, Robert Applegate of Maxwell; four grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Miller of Algona and Eleanore (and Wayne) Byerly of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Meredith Swartz, in 1991.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 11, at the Legion Hall in Maxwell with the Rev. Tom Lee officiating. Inurnment with military graveside rites, given by Elmer-Wilson Post #229, was in the Corwith Cemetery on Tuesday, Aug. 12, with the Rev. Phil Webb from the First United Methodist Church in Algona officiating. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, handled arrangements.
