Betty Sammons-Ames, Dec. 10, 1939 to Feb. 4, 2003
Betty Sammons, 63, of Maxwell died at her home Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 from complications of COPD.
She was born Dec. 10, 1939 in Ottumwa, to Harold and Iva (Huffman) Howk. She had owned and operated the Rose Garden Motel in Agency between 1979 and 1985. She was also known for her ability to raise and train horses. In 1985 she moved to Story County where she worked at Story County Youth and Shelter Services, retiring in 1997. She was advocate for children's rights.
She is survived by two daughters, Jayne Smith and Brenda Cummings, both of Maxwell; three grandchildren; four brothers, Ben, Tom, and Dick all of Ottumwa, and Harry Howk of Bloomfield; and three sister, LaRue Heaton of Kirksville, Mo., Sharon Blasi and Vicki Shively, both of Bloomefield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Linda Blasi and Sandra Luko; and a brother in infancy, Jackie Howk.
