Shirley A Hammond

Died July 2, 2003

Shirley Ambrose Hammond, 83, of Keswick, Va., died Wednesday, July 2.

She was born in Nevada to Stella Glover Ambrose and Harry Ambrose. While attending Iowa State University, she met and married Hobart Throckmorton in 1942. Three months before the birth of their daughter, Ann, Hobart was killed in action in World War II. She returned to the University of Iowa, eventually earning her master's in fine arts. During this time, she fell in love again and married Jerrold Eugene Hammond in 1948. After brief residences in Minnesota, Pennsylvania and New York, the family settled in Keswick in 1958.

She sang in the Grace Church choir and University Singers. She was a member of the Keswick Hunt Club and the Virginia Watercolor Society. She was a founding member of the McGuffey Art Center, where she had several shows and became a well-known artist and teacher.

Survivors include three children, Ann, Paul and Terrell; four grandchildren; a sister, Harriette Ambrose Kinsey; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Hammond; and two sons-in-law, Larry Von Feldt and Max Just.

Graveside services were held Sunday, July 6 at the Grace Episcopal Church at Keswick.
