Michael Eugene O'Mara, 89, of Nevada, died Wednesday, July 16, at Story County Hospital in Nevada. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at St. Patrick's Church in Nevada. Inurnment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Nevada.
A time of gathering and sharing will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, prior to the memorial service at the church.
Mike was born Oct. 16, 1918, at White Oak near Elkhart, to Michael and Nellie (McPherson) O'Mara. He went to elementary school at White Oak, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines in May 1936. He farmed near Farrar and entered the Army Air Corps in 1941. He served during World War II as a B-25 tailgunner. In 1944, he married Mary Ross. In 1954, he moved to Parkersburg and continued farming. In 1960, they moved to Cedar Falls, where he had a farm equipment business. In 1970, they moved to Nevada, where he had a grain handling business and did auctioneering.
He was a member of St. Patrick's parish in Nevada, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Nevada; four sons, Michael J., of Duluth, Minn., Patrick, of Port Orchard, Wash., John (Anne), of Lyons, Neb., and Jerry, of Nevada; and two daughters, Mary Margaret (Wade) Krieg, of Des Moines, and Lori (Rick) McQuiston, of Maxwell. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jim O'Mara; and four sisters, Mary Hutton, Bea Mathis, Blanche Mahler and Evelyn Canney.
