Harry Russell Rasmusson, 92, died Sunday, July 13, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at First United Methodist Church in Nevada. Burial will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at First Christian Church in Nevada.

Harry Russell Rasmusson was born July 12, 1916, on a farm near McCallsburg, to Walter C. and Lillie (Scott) Rasmusson. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1942, and became a member of the 90th Infantry Division "Tough Ombre" combat engineers. Along with his comrades in arms, he landed on the coast of Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He served in Europe until the end of the war in October 1945. The 90th Division participated in every major battle of World War II. He received several citations, including the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in combat.

After returning from the war, he married Mathilda Grace Meyer, of Wellsburg, on Dec. 26, 1945. They farmed near McCallsburg for 40 years before retiring to Nevada in 1986. He and Mathilda were married for 40 years, until her death in 1986.

He was a member of the McCallsburg American Legion Post 334, and participated in Memorial Day programs for 62 years, missing only the 2008 program due to health reasons. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Nevada and also was a member of several boards and organizations. He will be remembered for his love of family, his patriotism and his lifelong career in farming.

He is survived by four children, Linda (Steve) Saveraid, of Minnetonka, Minn., James (Barb) Rasmusson, of McCallsburg, Dr. Nancy (Randy) Sebring, of Des Moines, and Dr. Nina Rasmusson, of Ames. He loved and enjoyed eight grandchildren, Andrea (Nat) Little, J.D., of Seattle, Wash., Dr. Lisa (Steve) Domino, of Des Moines, Sara Rasmusson, of Iowa City, Allison Dunker, of Ankeny, Lauren Dunker, of Ames, Dena Saveraid, of Minneapolis, Greg (Jenn) Sebring, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Dana Sebring, of Des Moines. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Lois Rasmusson, of Nevada, and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter C. and Lillie (Scott) Rasmusson; his wife, Mathilda; and one sister, Irene Jacobson, of Roland. He also was preceded in death by one niece, Bernita Jacobson, and one great-niece, Melissa (Jacobson) Peterson, of Story City.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
