Keith Van Winkle, 92, of Ames, died Monday, July 14, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Keith Merle Van Winkle, 92, died Monday, July 14, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Keith Merle Van Winkle was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Brighton. He was the younger of two children of Edward and Bonnie (Alexander) Van Winkle. He graduated from Webster City High School and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. He played baseball while in college and later played on a semi pro team for Webster City. He later earned a master's degree from Iowa State University. He married Mildred Meyer Sept. 3, 1937, in Lancaster, Mo. They lived in Gilman and Grinnell before moving to Ames in 1943, where they raised their three children, Kerry, Judith and Eric. He taught industrial arts at Welch Junior High in Ames and coached football, basketball, track and baseball. He was also a football and basketball official for many levels of sports. He retired from teaching in 1980. During retirement, Keith and Mildred enjoyed traveling to see family on the West Coast. He was a longtime member of Memorial Lutheran Church.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was very proud of his family and greatly enjoyed following all of their activities. He had a love for sports, as athletics were a dominant part of his life. He enjoyed coaching sports as well as watching them. Along with coaching, he enjoyed playing bridge, camping, doing Jumble puzzles, hunting, golfing, attending athletic events at Roland-Story and Iowa State, listening to music and attending activities at Heartland Senior Center. He also enjoyed many visits from former students and colleagues he worked with while teaching. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his three children, Kerry (Marty) Van Winkle, of Roland, Judith Handy, of Riverside, Calif., and Eric Van Winkle, of Sacramento, Calif.; six grandchildren, Cassandra Handy, of Riverside, Calif., Nicholas (Joanna) Handy, of Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., George (Shelly) Van Winkle, of Fargo, N.D., Holyce Van Winkle, of Story City, Kristin (Michael) Vinson, of Roland, and Kyle Van Winkle, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and six great-grandchildren, Mia Handy, of Oceanside, Calif., Fallon, George Jr. and Ashley Van Winkle, of Fargo, N.D., and Dana and Braden Vinson, of Roland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bonnie Van Winkle; one brother, George Van Winkle; his wife, Mildred; and one son-in-law, William Handy.
