He then moved to the CJHL with the Nepean Raiders when he was 17 years old. He was drafted to the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting (New Market Royals). A major highlight of his hockey career was being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL in 1994 in the eighth round. He graduated from St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2000, with bachelor's degrees in business administration and sociology. He was a seeker of knowledge and a lover of mankind, so with this in mind he was pursuing a nursing degree.
It was through the game that he loved that he met his wife, Brooke. They were married Sept. 16, 2006, in Ames. They were blessed with one daughter, Olivia James, 6 months old.
He loved the game of golf and enjoyed playing when he had the chance. He also loved politics and friendly debates, but most of all loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Brooke, his daughter, Olivia, and their beloved dog Bayleigh; his mother, Edith, and stepfather, Glenn Johnston; his father, John, and stepmother, Sharron Guinn; one sister, Maryann, and husband, Garry Desrosiers; his father and mother-in-law, Jim and Debbie Chittenden, of Ames; sisters-in-law, Amber Dinwiddie, Chelsey (Joe) Beavers and Draven McPeak; brother-in-law, Lucas Chittenden; nieces, Emma Desrosiers and Addilee Bennett; and nephews, Dausen Gourley and Hayden and Eathen Dinwiddie; as well as many teammates and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Rob Guinn Memorial Fund to support 6-month-old daughter Olivia's future education. Donations should be directed to the Leighton Legal Law Firm, 802 N. Clinton Street, Suite 1, Bloomington, IL, 61701.
