THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, July 15, 2008.
Holly M. Burkhalter, 86, of Ames, died Thursday, July 10, at Greenhills Healthcare Center in Ames. A celebration of her life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames, with Brian Eslinger officiating.
Holly M. Burkhalter was born April 4, 1922, in Bredenbury, Saskatchewan, Canada, to John and Holly (Rowan) Mosiman. She married Laurence Burkhalter Aug. 14, 1943, in Bluffton, Ohio.
She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Bluffton College in Bluffton, Ohio, and was a language arts teacher in the Nevada Community Schools from 1967 to 1995. Prior to moving to Ames, she taught language arts in the Mifflin Township, Ohio, middle school.
She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames. Upon her retirement from teaching, she assisted with the founding of the Worldly Goods Gift Shop in Ames and served as its manager for seven years.
She is survived by her husband, Laurence, of Ames; children, Kathlynn Lockard, of Sycamore, Ill., Karol Crosbie, of Wooster, Ohio, Gary Burkhalter, of Wellsburg, Holly J. Burkhalter, of Washington, D.C., and Ruth Bosley, of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by brother, two sisters and an infant son.
Memorials may be directed to the Mennonite Central Committee.
Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
