Marie Nolan, 90, of Spokane, Washington, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 1996 at the St. Joseph Care Center in Spokane, Washington. A memorial service will by held at Grace Methodist Church, Story City, on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Don Preston officiating.
Marie Hughes was born Nov. 30, 1905 in Chokio, Minnesota to Charles and Minnie (Toll) Hughes. She grew up on a farm in the Luther area where she develped a love of the timber and wildflowers which she passed on as a heritage to her children. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College and taught in the Des Moines Public Schools for seven years. She married Patrick Nolan of Formoso, Kansas in 1937. They farmed south of Story City from 1944 to 1982. Their farm on the Skunk River, with its strawberry and pumpkin patches, was known and loved for miles around. Marie's interest in geology developed into a rock collecting and polishing hobby for both of them.
Marie was active in Grace Methodist Church where she taught an adult Sunday School class for over 20 years. She was a member of the Story City Federated Woman's Club and the Owl Country Club. During the '60s and '70s she worked as head librarian at the Story City library.
Survivors include one son, John Nolan and wife Carolyn of Madera, California; one daughter, Jean Larson and husband Gordon of Spokane, Washington; and four grandchildren, Scott and Patrick Larson of Spokane, and Laurel and Luke Nolan of Madera.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Minnie Hughes, her husband Pat Nolan in 1982, and her two brothers, Rexford and Kenneth Hughes.
Memorials may be made to the Bertha Bartlett Public Library, the Skunk River Green Belt Association or Grace Methodist Church.
