THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 10, 2008.

Janice May Helland, 85, of Huxley, died Tuesday, July 8, at Madrid Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, officiated by Rev. John Nelson, of Woodbury, Minn. Burial will be in Fjeldberg Cemetery in Huxley.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.

Janice was born May 13, 1923, in Muskegon, Mich., to M. Earl and Jennie (Bond) Saunier. She graduated in 1944 from E.W. Sparrow School of Nursing in Lansing, Mich., and completed postgraduate work in polio therapy, the precursor to the field of physical therapy. In 1949, she set up the polio unit at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. She married Clark Helland Aug. 18, 1951, in Bay City, Mich. They farmed together until they retired in 1992.

Left to honor her memory are two sons, Charles, of Huxley, and Mike (Juli) Helland, of Huxley; one daughter, Phyllis (Ray) Helland-Morse, of Eugene, Ore.; one sister, Donna Scoles, of Midland, Mich.; six grandsons, Andrew and Jeremy Morse, and Dustin (Emily), Ryan, Erik (Sandi), and Nick (Cara) Helland; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark, in 2006, two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be given to the church or Madrid Home.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater is in charge of arrangements.
