THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, July 9, 2008.

June 13, 1915-July 6, 2008

Bette E. Ritland, 93, of Story City and formerly of Ames, was called home to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 6. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with the Rev. Joel Wight Hoogheem and Chaplain Sandy Anenson officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Bethesda Lutheran Church.

Bette E. Ritland was born June 13, 1915, in Roland, the eldest of five children born to Arthur and Helga (Kvalem) Britson. She graduated from Roland High School in 1933. She was an excellent student, thoroughly enjoyed school and was involved in a wide range of both academic and extracurricular activities. Foremost was recognition gained in music and drama.

She met her husband, Everett G. Ritland, at Luther College in Decorah in the fall of 1933. They were married in 1934, and four children were born to this union, Michael Don, Rosemary, Patricia Lynn and Mark Everett. Except for one year in Gilbert, they spent the remainder of married life (65 years) in Ames. Everett passed away in 1999.

She loved life and was a wonderful role model as a wife, mother and friend. She will be especially remembered for her talents as a homemaker. Among her special interests were activities that involved her Scandinavian heritage, cooking favorite dishes, interior decorating using Rosemaling (design painting used to brighten Norwegian homes in rugged, cold climates), annual Bethesda Lutheran Church Scandinavian Coffees, singing in the church choir and longtime membership in Tri-T (a benevolent society).

She will long be remembered for her loving personality and strong commitment to the spiritual dimension of her life. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her three children, Mike (Dori) Ritland, of Eau Claire, Wis., Rosemary Low, of Boulder, Colo., and Mark Ritland, of Ames; her grandchildren, Kris (Brian) Pressler and Katie (Bill) Clouse, all of Eau Claire, Wis., Mara Sonnenschein, of Philadelphia, Eric, of Washington, D.C., Craig, of Chicago, and Ericka Low and Victoria Adams, both of Ann Arbor, Mich.; her great-grandchildren, Britta and Bjorn Pressler and Annika and Dane Clouse, all of Eau Claire, Wis.; and one sister, Delores Maguard, of Fort Atkinson, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Everett; one daughter, Patricia Ritland Willig; three brothers, Bill, Ralph and Loren Britson; and one son-in-law, Roger Low.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
