THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 3, 2008.

Nov. 23, 1927-June 29, 2008

Charles L. "Chuck" Petersen, 80, of Ames, died Sunday, June 29. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery and a reception will follow.

Chuck Petersen was born Nov. 23, 1927, in Chicago, to Charles and Mary Petersen. Growing up in Chicago created the unfortunate circumstance of being a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-55.

He married Doris Daill and took their two sons on a whirlwind tour of the eastern and central United States, living in all the hotspots including Peoria, Ill., Omaha Neb., Louisville, Ky., Richardson, Texas, and finally settling in Ames.

He met the love of his life, Ann Dirksen, and they married in 1974. He was a devoted husband and loving father to her daughter, Julie.

He was absolutely, without a doubt, unarguably the best husband, dad, granddad, friend and all-around-fantastic human being. He was a really cool guy who loved music, flying, jokes and Ray Romano. He possessed a unique warmth and charm, befriending everyone he met.

He will be unimaginably missed by one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Walter Witthoff, of Urbandale; one son and daughter-in-law, Chick Petersen and Deborah Parrish, of Tomales, Calif.; one grandson, Chas Petersen, of San Francisco; one granddaughter, Nicci Evans, of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Arline Keller, of Florence, S.C.; and countless friends.

He endured losing his youngest son, Carl Petersen, and his beloved wife, Ann, with extraordinary grace, always maintaining his warm generosity and sense of humor.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Ames Alano Society, P.O. Box 296, Ames, IA 50010.
