Richard (Dick) Ness, 76, of Ames and formerly a longtime resident of Story City, died Sunday, June 29, at home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 209 Colorado Ave., in Ames. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date.

Richard was born May 13, 1932, in Story City, to Cora (Thompson) and Gaylord Ness. He graduated from Story City High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict from 1950-54, where he received several meritorious medals, including three Purple Hearts. After returning from Korea, he worked at the Atomic Energy Commission and was a bio lab tech at the National Animal Disease Lab for 17 years. After retiring from civil service in 1975, he was self-employed as a construction contractor.

He was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 307 (Roland), the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Men's Bible Fellowship and Bible Study Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Ames; his father-in-law, Leslie Ryerson, of Ames; one daughter, Kim Ness (Todd) Fink, of Story City; three sons, Monte (Jamie) Ness, of Phoenix, Robert (Dee Danielson) Ness, of Ames, and Terry Ness, of St. Louis; three stepdaughters, Carol (Bob) Crane, of Boone, Sherry (Ben) Poole, of Grimes, and Julie Osborn, of Boone; one stepson, Tim (Esie) Fisher, of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Eric (Jennifer) Fink, of Ames, Brett Fink and Molly Fink, both of Story City, Tristyn, Nicole and Brittany Ness, all of Phoenix, Bryan Ness, of Kansas City, Mo., Natalie Ness, of St. Louis, Travis (Chantel) Ness, Brandie (Alan) Gossel, Jamie (Adam) Lee and Joe (Cary) Ness, all of Story City, Shane Ness, of Ames, Morgan Todd, of Grimes, Janey Fisher, Madison, Haley and Gabrielle Osborn, all of Boone, and Nathan and Michael Fisher, of Oklahoma City; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris (Harold) Childers; one brother, Bob (Pauline) Ness, of Story City; and one sister-in-law, Karen (John) Alexander, of Woodward.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gladys Wagner and Sharon Ness; one brother, Larry Ness; and his mother-in-law, Lois Ryerson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Lutheran Church music ministries, Riverside Bible Camp or Israel Family Hospice House.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is assisting with arrangements.
