Aug. 3, 1928-June 23, 2008

Doris Lucille Carlson, 79, formerly of Huxley, died Monday, June 23, at Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny, of natural causes. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, and the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, both at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley.

Doris was born Aug. 3, 1928, near Beresford, S.D., to Andrew and Anna (Dahl) Twedt. She graduated from Beresford High School and participated in Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

She married Wesley Edmund Carlson June 20, 1948, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford, S.D. Following their marriage, they lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., where Wes worked with his brother-in-law as a homebuilder. Later, they also had an automobile and appliance dealership in Sheldon. The young family then lived in Guthrie Center before moving to the Cambridge-Alleman-Slater-Huxley area where the children were raised.

Wes and Doris lived in Huxley for 29 years in a home they had built and were active members of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church. She worked at the Dairy Sweet in Huxley and retired from a 20-year career at Bourns Inc., of Ames. In retirement, Doris enjoyed traveling, dancing and the company of friends and family. In 2004, they moved to the Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny.

She is survived by one son, Duane (Anne), of Waterloo; two daughters, Gloria (Rick) Anderson, of Ankeny, and Cheryl (Bob Mills), of Grimes; seven beloved grandchildren, Eric (Catherine) Carlson, Christine (Mattison) Darragh, Nick Anderson, Jason (Jessie) Anderson, Kacie Anderson, Garrett Acuņa and Colton Mills; and five treasured great-grandchildren, Caleb, Samuel, Abigail, Isabelle and Madison; and two sisters, Violet Severtson, of Huxley, and Evelyn (Bud) Thorson, of Chandler, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Wes, earlier this year; one son, Gary; two sisters, Pearl Hovick and Thelma Thompson; and eight brothers, Elmer, Arnold, Irvin, Noble, Benny, Milton, Donald and Raymond.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for later distribution.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater is in charge of arrangements.
