THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, June 13, 2008.

1934-2008

John Allen Amme, 74, of Oklahoma City, Okla., died Saturday, June 7, with his family at his side. Always willing to share a joke, John's spirit made him a favorite to be around.

He was born to Lewis and Kathryn (Swartz) Amme in Ames in 1934 and graduated from Ames High School in 1952. He attended Iowa State University and worked as a projectionist for Ames theaters. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1956 and served until 1960 aboard the USS Antietam (CVS-36).

He married Emma Jane Huntley, Sept. 21, 1957, and embarked on nearly 51 years together. They were stationed in Jacksonville, Fla., and Pensacola, Fla., and then Denver, Colo., where he later worked for the FAA. While in Denver, he became an avid Broncos fan. The family transferred to Oklahoma City in 1974, and he taught at the FAA Academy until he retired in 1993. He loved teaching and sharing his knowledge with others. He earned his commercial pilot's certificate and subsequently flew his family to different vacation locations over the years.

He is survived by his wife, E. Jane; his sons Gregory John and his wife, Laura, of Lewisville, Texas, Daniel Allen, of Oklahoma City, and Mark Andrew and his wife, Ann, of Oklahoma; three grandsons, Matthew, Corey, and John R. Amme; one brother, Dr. Robert C. Amme and wife, Jan, of Littleton, Colo.; and one sister, Marjorie Neeper and her husband, Joe, of The Woodlands, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 14, at Vondel Smith Mortuary North Colonial Chapel. The family would like to thank John's physicians, especially Dr. Richard G. Wood and the 4A staff at Mercy Health Center, and also his physical therapist, Mrs. Richard McNeil.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mercy Cancer Unit, Mercy Foundation, 4300 W. Memorial, Oklahoma City, OK, 73120.
