THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, June 3, 2008.

Warren E. Israel, of Ames, died Saturday, May 31, at Israel Family Hospice House, a facility he helped found and named for his family. A celebration of Warren's life will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at First Christian Church, Sixth Street and Clark Avenue, in Ames. The family will receive friends and family from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, in the church parlor.

Warren E. Israel was born July 12, 1923, in Lancaster, Mo. In 1945, he married Mary Morrow. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater until 1946. In 1948, he graduated from the American Institute of Business. He started a retail appliance business in Nevada with his partner, J. B. Walker. The company moved to Ames in 1953 and opened Home Furniture and Appliances. For more than 40 years, he was active in the business community, serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce and as an unashamed promoter of the city of Ames. He was involved in many philanthropic endeavors, including Heartland Senior Center, Ames Foundation, the Hospice House and the Children's Home in Reynosa, Mexico. He was an active member of First Christian Church for 52 years.

He is survived by Mary, his wife of 63 years; one daughter, Jan (Ken) Augustine, of Ames; one granddaughter, Karen (Ron) Fickel, of Hartland, Wis.; and three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Andrew and Daniel. He also is survived by four brothers, John (Vonnie), of Ames, Charles (Charlene), of Kernersville, N.C., Carl (Elaine), of Lenox, and Don (Cindy), of Fort Myers, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother; two brothers; and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials to be sent to Israel Family Hospice House, in care of Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation, 1111 Duff Ave., Ames, IA, 50010.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
