Lavern B. Wismer, "Bebe", 80, passed away peacefully at his home in McCallsburg on May 5, 2008. Visitation was held May 13th at the Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing, Iowa. Funeral Services were held on May 14th at the Samuel Reid American Legion Hall Post #334, McCallsburg, at 11:00 A.M. with internment at the Warren Township Cemetery, McCallsburg.

Lavern Byron Wismer was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 17, 1927 to Byron and Mabel (Caltvedt) Wismer. In 1929, they moved to the MeCallsburg, Iowa area. He graduated from the McCallsburg High School in 1945. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. After high school, he joined the Navy where he served for two years. He then attended UNI for three years.

On November 30, 1957 he married Shirley Coletta Stackhouse at St. Gabriel's Church in Zearing, Iowa, and moved to the Chicago, IL area where he was a Tuck Pointer and Mail Carrier. Their six children were all born in Highland Park.

In the summer of 1974, he moved the family back to McCallsburg where he worked for the Nevada School System until retiring in 1989. His hobbies included gardening, cutting wood and fishing. He returned to work part-time at the VF Mall in Story City until the fall of 2006 when his health began to decline. He died peacefully at home after a brief diagnosis of cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, six children: Dan, Jewell, IA; Connie (Kraig) Anderson, Story City, IA; Nancy (Mike) Jordan, Story City, IA; Mary Lou Wismer, Story City, IA; Theresa (John) Cook, Mankato, MN; Deb Tarbill (Gary Steel), Gilbert, IA; 19 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Rosalyn (Dom) Volopendesta of IL; Lucy Jacobson of McCallsburg, IA; brother Franklin (Joan) Wismer of Miss., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Evelyn and brother-in-law John Jacobson. Fredregill Funeral Home, Zearing, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
