Melvin Ingram, 76, of Ames, died Thursday, May 15. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, at First Evangelical Free Church in Ames.

Melvin Ingram, 76, of Ames, died Thursday, May 15, of Parkinson's disease and related ailments at the Madrid Nursing Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, at the First Evangelical Free Church in Ames.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Melvin Eugene Ingram was born July 6, 1931, in Mt. Ayr, to Herman and Mildred (Spencer) Ingram. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He married Frieda Thomas Jan. 23, 1955, in Grant City, Mo. They are the parents of Thomas, James, Timothy and John.

He served as a manager for P.M. Place Variety Stores in Iowa and Missouri from 1954 to 1964. He became an agent for State Farm Insurance, where he continued until his health failed in 1986. His main pleasures in life were volunteering at his church and teaching his sons the value of hard work done cheerfully. He always had a smile and a greeting for everyone. He loved helping with sports, as coach for Little League, and was known for his fairness and honesty. He loved golfing, bowling and playing pool. Bridge, cribbage and solitaire were his pastimes.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Frieda; his four sons, Tom (Jeanette), of Dallas, Jim (Kathy) and their children, Laura and Matthew, of Lenexa, Kan., Tim (Beth) and their children, Elijah and Gabriel, of West Des Moines, and Dr. John (Andrea) and their children, Nickolas, Rachael, Spencer and Jacqueline, of Denison; sister, Vesta Still, of Mt. Ayr; brother, Myron (Shirley) Ingram, of Mt. Ayr; brother-in-law, Sam Marr, of Bethany, Mo.; sister-in-law, Shirley B. Ingram, of Perry; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evelyn Marr; brother, Corwin Ingram; and brother-in-law, Ray Still.

Memorials may be directed to the First Evangelical Free Church in Ames.
