THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, May 16, 2008.
May 1, 1921-May 12, 2008
Peggy C. Jetmund, 87, died peacefully Monday, May 12, in her home near Gilbertville. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, with burial in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Hagarty Waychoff Grarup Funeral Service on South Street in Waterloo. Visitation also will be available at the church one hour before services.
Peggy C. Jetmund was born May 1, 1921, in Hampton, the daughter of Thomas Ignatius and Elsie Elizabeth (Depping) Christie. She married Raymond Irvin Jetmund Aug. 1, 1948, in Dows. He preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1974.
She attended MacMurray College in Illinois, graduating magna cum laude in 1943 from Drake University in Des Moines, with a bachelor of arts degree in music education. She later earned a master of arts degree in special education from Iowa State University.
She was a gifted pianist and teacher with more than 60 years teaching piano, marching band, general music and special education at over a dozen Iowa schools. She retired in 1993 after 15 years at Jesup Community School. She served on numerous music/education boards and committees, and was a well-respected certified adjudicator for piano competitions.
Beginning in 2003, she made progressively longer visits to daughter Diane on Martha's Vineyard Island. She loved the island, insisting on daily drives along the water's edge. She made many friends there, including a spunky group of peers and staff that were in her cherished Supportive Day Program.
She is survived by three children, C. Diane Jetmund, of West Tisbury, Mass., Douglas R. Jetmund, of Evansdale, and Leisa M. Phillips, wife of Darell Phillips, of Gilbertville; six grandchildren, Jolaine Mills, of Oakland, Jade Graves, of Nashua, N.H., Runa Jetmund, of Phoenix, Benjamin (Sarah) Phillips, of Warrensburg, Mo., Bartholomew Phillips, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Brittany Phillips, of Ruthven; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua Mills, Christan Mills and Tianna Graves.
Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.
