Robert (Bob) Solomon, of Williamsburg, Va., died Thursday, May 1. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, Va.

Robert (Bob) Solomon was born in Boston, Mass., the first son to Ted J. and Marian Loomer Solomon. He graduated from Gilbert High School in Gilbert in 1973. Dr. Solomon received his medical degree from the University of Iowa, College of Medicine, in Iowa City in 1981, after receiving his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in distributed studies, chemistry, physics and South Asian studies. Dr. Solomon also attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, through which he spent a college year in India, and Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

Dr. Solomon's postgraduate studies included a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology in the Division of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, Va. He performed his residency in neurology in the Department of Neurology, Northwestern University, Graduate Medical Education, The Medical School, in Chicago, Ill., from 1982 to 1985, where he also performed his internship in internal medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine from 1981 to 1982.

Dr. Solomon was a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Virginia Neurological Society, and the Williamsburg-James City County Medical Society, of which he was president in 1992 and 2003. He was board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the specialty of neurology and contributed 22 years of medical practice in the Williamsburg community.

He was an active member of The Society of Friends and active in Friends Meetings in Ames, Chicago, Richmond, and Williamsburg, Va. He was active in the civil rights movement and antiwar activities of the 1960s and 1970s and believed in Gandhian Non-Violence and Peace and was a member of Community of Faith for Peace. He firmly believed and actively lobbied that health care should be a human right, and supported the Old Town Free Clinic, and wishes memorial contributions be made to the Old Town Free Clinic.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Winston; son, Joshua Solomon; parents, Ted and Marian Solomon, of Ames; brother, Richard Solomon, of Denver, Colo.; sister, Becky Musselman; stepsons Francisco (Paco) and Franklin (Ricky) Artes; grandchildren, Paol, Marcel and Kayla Artes; nephews, Eli and Zeke Musselman, of Ames, and Jeff Solomon and wife, Christin, of Ferndale, Calif.; niece, Carlie Solomon, of Denver, Colo., and two great-nieces, Anastasia Rose and Calypso Lily.
