THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, April 23, 2008.

Sept. 10, 1940-April 18, 2008

Kay Sweet, 67, of Ames, died Friday, April 18. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Adams Funeral Home. A memorial celebration will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, at Ames First United Methodist Church, with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion.

Kay was born Sept. 10, 1940, in Sand Spring, Okla., to Howard and Lillian Dodson. Her birth name was Sandra Kayleen, but she went by Kay her entire life. Upon graduation from Sand Spring High School in 1958, she went to Oklahoma State University where she majored in home economics. She married Roger Sweet Nov. 24, 1961.

She was an amazing woman. She single handedly raised two children after Roger's death in 1982. She was a member of the American Legion and Eastern Star. She actively played bridge and Trivial Pursuit with her many friends. Her passion was quilting, and she often would be found in her recliner with a basketball game on the television and a quilt in her lap. She was also an avid reader, which was a love she passed to both of her children. She never was without at least three different books. She was independent, humble, brave and strong. She will be missed, but lives on in the lives that she touched.

She will be missed most by her children, Joe (Christy) Sweet and Meghan Sweet, of Chicago. She lives on in her sister, Letha (Bill) Jones, and her nephew, Greg (Debra) Jones, of Oklahoma; her brother-in-law, Tom (Jane) Sweet, her niece, Whitney Sweet, and her nephew, Nicholai Sweet, of Colorado. Her beloved friends will continue to play bridge and sew in her honor.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger K. Sweet; her parents, Howard and Lillian Dodson; and her parents-in-law, George and Claire Sweet.

In lieu of flowers, Kay asks that you give of your time or money to your favorite charity.
