May 10, 1983-April 12, 2008

Benjamin Allen Baird, 24, of Ames and formerly of Denver, died Saturday, April 12, at home of complications from a seizure. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly, with Father Mike Tauke officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Denver.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver, and one hour prior to the service Thursday, April 17, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral home in Waverly.

Benjamin Allen Baird was born May 10, 1983, in Waterloo, the son of Wayne and Sheila (Busch) Baird. He was raised in Denver, and worked at the Willow Run Country Club as a lifeguard and at Benders grocery store. He graduated from Denver High School in May 2001. He then started the pursuit of his dream of becoming a chemist and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. While attending UNI, he would work during the summer doing chemical research. He currently was working toward his doctorate in chemistry at Iowa State University in Ames and employed by ISU as a research assistant.

His enjoyments included sports. He wrestled and played football in high school, and SportsCenter was one of his favorite programs. He also loved hanging out with his giant circle of friends. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly, a Boy's State attendee, member of the American Association of Chemistry, All-State Music in high school and a member of the Men's Glee Club and Mixed Choir at UNI.

His memory is honored by his parents, Wayne and Sheila Baird, of Denver; his brother, Alexander Baird, of Ames; his paternal grandparents, Merlin and Janice Baird, of Galesville, Wis.; and his maternal grandmother, Adelene Busch, of Festina.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Hubert Busch.

A memorial has been established to UNI Chemistry Department Foundation.
