Retired Master Sgt. Merrill Peck "Mert" Bonwell, of Lawton, Okla., died Oct. 11, 2007, in Lawton. Graveside service and burial of ashes will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, in Ontario Cemetery in Ames, with the Rev. David Burling officiating.
Merrill Peck "Mert" Bonwell was born Feb. 14, 1947, at Fort Lewis, Wash., to Clyde and Pauline Bonwell. He attended school in Ames and was a graduate of Ames High School. He attended Iowa State University and was a graduate of Cameron University in Lawton, Okla.
He married Marlene Lee in 1970 in Ames. He retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Sill after 22 years of service. He was a veteran of Vietnam and had been stationed in Germany and Korea. Following his retirement, he worked for Military Service Company. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 37 in Ames and 40/8 Voiture 285, Story County. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, in Lawton, and had served on the administrative board, Council on Ministries, Missions, Trustees and was past president of United Methodist Men.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Lawton, Okla., and one son, Patrick, of Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Becker Funeral Home Inc., of Lawton, is in charge of arrangements.
