Gary Leon Tjelmeland, 69, of Story City, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2007 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial followed in the Story City Cemetery.

Gary was born Dec. 2, 1937 near Roland, Iowa to Ward and Gladys (Osmundson) Tjelmeland. He grew up near Roland and graduated from Roland High School. Following high school Gary served in the US Marines. He married Janice Krause on December 28, 1959 in Roland. They resided in Story City for many years where Gary owned and operated the Gary Tjemeland Agency, Insurance and Real Estate. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by one son, Monte and his wife Chris Tjelmeland of Blair, Nebraska; one daughter, Jana Finnegan of Urbandale; two sisters, Lola Mae Anderson of Nevada and Delores Campbell of Gilbert, Arizona; four brothers, Leo Tjelmeland of Nevada, Wayne Tjelmeland of Bloomington, Illinois, Joel Tjelmeland of Springfield, Illinois and Gordon Tjelmeland of Clive; and four grandchildren, Adam and Briana Finnegan and Andrea and Brenan Tjelmeland. Gary is also survived by his loving and faithful companion of seven years, Jan Neese of Story City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and three brothers, Wally, Keith and Harold Tjelmeland.

A visitation was held on Monday, March 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
